Help Battersea Arts Centre and partners empower creativity in the crisis, with 1000 play kits for Wandsworth children

by Battersea Arts Centre in London, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

Our first goal is to send 1000 packs in June/July 2020. If we exceed our target we will simply make more and extend the project timeline for collaborating families and to other areas in South London.

This project will be the springboard for BAC’s autumn season of work; an inclusive community-led and socially distanced creative programme, and transformed autumn season.

Being creative can feel like magic. Your gift will mean that a child in South London can make some magic happen in their own home during the crisis.

BAC has come together with brilliant local organisations to produce PlayKits for children in Wandsworth, containing activities and challenges designed by inspiring artists. The kits will give children a creative outlet and support them to process difficult changes and feelings as a result of Covid-19 and lockdown.

This is an emergency scheme in response to Covid-19, running in collaboration with 575 Wandsworth Road (National Trust), Agora Arts Circle, Creative Wandsworth, Nine Elms Arts Ministry, Royal College of Art (Battersea), Roehampton R.O.C.K.S., Sen Talk, Tara Arts and Wandsworth Council.

We believe the ability to be creative is something that everyone should have access to, regardless of economic circumstances. Can you join with us in supporting local children and families?

Over June, July and August, the PlayKits will bring creativity into the heart of family homes and encourage and inspire 6-10 year-olds to make, learn and play.

The ambition is to deliver 1000 free kits in June, before following up in July and August with parcels with more creative challenges. Each kit costs £10 to put together, donations will directly pay for materials and activities designed by artists.

The first kits to go out will include:

  • materials (scissors, glue, craft paper, stickers, pens, crayons)
  • a booklet of creative challenges
  • an interactive guide to getting creative in Wandsworth

Every £10 donation is a new pack for a family.

If we exceed our target of 1000 kits, we will make more packs and extend the project to other areas in South London. We dream of sending out 3000.

Our action responds to the UK Government's guidance about supporting child and family wellbeing during the crisis. Focusing on creativity and learning something new, together with physical wellbeing, can have powerful impact now and in the future.

"Regardless of their age, this may be a difficult time for children and young people. During this time, it’s important that you support and take care of your family’s mental health."
Public Health England

On 9 June the UK Government announced that its target to to ask all primary schools to reopen four weeks before the summer holidays will not be met. The children’s commissioner for England indicated that 'the vast majority, probably about 8 million children, very likely won’t return to the classroom until September' and many will not receive 'the support they need to learn during this period'. Of course, this impacts many families in Wandsworth.

We will do our little bit now, because all the little bits add up. Will you help us?

"There can be no better example of a community coming together for a common good at a time of crisis. Over 27 remarkable local organisations and schools, together with a small army of generous volunteers, have collaborated to bring joy and creativity to our local children. In this endeavour they have been brilliantly supported by Wandsworth Council and our local charities. The pandemic crisis is very real and is hitting our communities hard – but we are showing our local determination to work together, and help each other through this. And that spirit of cooperation and partnership makes everything possible." Tarek Iskander, BAC Artistic Director & CEO

As lockdown lifts, BAC will continue this work, at our home and in communities, providing joy and connected purpose through creativity.

Thank you!

BAC & Partners

And THANKS to the funders and supporters who have helped so far: Battersea United Charities, Creative Wandsworth, Wandsworth Council, A New Direction, Putney High School GDST, ASDA and YOU the crowd.

While you're here, thank you to everyone who has donated to BAC over the last few months. Your support and generosity is amazing! Although our doors are closed for now, our work is needed more than ever. Many of our projects have gone online as we continue to connect with and empower the artists, young people and local communities who work with us. Our Going Global season has gone digital, allowing artists whose shows were cancelled due to Covid-19, to share their work with audiences; we are supporting artists to produce 6 new Culture in Quarantine commissions for the BBC; and our programmes for local young people, such as The Agency and BAC Beatbox Academy are running online. A donation to Battersea Arts Centre, no matter how large or small, helps us keep these projects live, and really makes a difference to those who rely on us. For more info visit
