I began Bee Collective in 2012 to help London's bees and beekeepers. With support from Victoria BID and Grosvenor we set up a honey house in London Victoria to extract and sell honey. Each year since then, myself and my colleague Cassandra, have welcomed hundreds of amazing volunteers who have signed up to do something different, meet new people and help extract and jar honey from hives across the capital. Beekeepers bring honey straight from their hives to the honey house where our volunteers carefully spin and jar the honey on their behalf. The beekeeper pays a small fee for the service as a combination of honey and money and we sell our share of the honey to help cover our running costs. We've moved honey house several times since then - going where we can for a 'peppercorn' rent.
The 'Big Idea' is to use our honey house as a platform to develop projects for improving London's landscape for bees. In this way our beekeepers, volunteers and honey-buying customers are helping to give back to the bees and sustain the craft of urban beekeeping. So far we have helped to establish the 'Making a B-Line for London' partnership and we that we can continue this ambitious and exciting project. We have also worked with Bee Midtown to develop and help deliver the Bee Wild programme, creating bee-friendly rooftop gardens across Holborn, Bloomsbury, St Giles, Farringdon and Clerkenwell.
Since our honey house is very small, we are not able to safely social-distance, so we can't currently provide a honey service to beekeepers or run our volunteer programme. Nor are we able to sell our stock of honey. We are looking to see how we might be able to still support beekeepers and continue to engage our volunteers, but with the honey season already in full flow we may miss this years crop entirely.
We are therefore asking our supporters old and new to donate or to consider buying our honey now, which we can give to you later, to help us get through this period.
Thank you from Caroline, Cassandra and the bees!
